I was headed for divorce before Zyppah…
When we first got married, bedtime was a peaceful end to a busy day. But over the last few years, I started dreading it. The reason: the man I shared a bed with started sounding like a buzz saw! The snoring started gradually, and over time, it got so loud that I couldn’t sleep. I would race to bed hoping to fall asleep before he did, but eventually, his snoring would wake me up! The kids, who sleep across the hall, were complaining, as well. Even when he slept on the couch, we could all could still hear it. No one in the house was sleeping, except my husband. I was grouchy and miserable. I like to call this time in my life BZ – before Zyppah.
What causes snoring…
First, I wanted to figure out what caused my husband to snore before I started looking for a way to stop it. It turns out that snoring can be caused by any number of factors such as narrow passageways in the throat due to relaxed muscles in the tongue and back of mouth, weight gain, and sleep apnea. That last one was a concern because it can be a serious condition. Symptoms of sleep apnea include loud snoring followed by periods of silence when breathing stops or nearly stops. This can cause the person to wake up with a loud snort or gasp. Sleep apnea can severely disrupt sleep, and can be dangerous due to the periods of little or no breathing going on. If you suspect that you or your partner may be suffering from sleep apnea, be sure to see a doctor before trying any anti snore devices on your own.
Since I was fairly certain that my husband did not have sleep apnea, I started searching for the best products stop snoring.
My search for the best way to stop snoring…
Since divorce due to snoring didn’t seem like a valid reason to end a 18-year happy marriage, I started doing some research. I found several “stop snoring products” out there. The product that seemed the easiest to use was an anti snore mouthpiece. According to what I read, the “sleep thief”… I mean person with the snoring problem, puts it in before bed, and supposedly the snoring stops! This sounded fantastic! To be clear: none of the devices claimed to cure sleep apnea, only to stop snoring. For diagnoses and cures for sleep apnea, you need to see a doctor. Anyway, I started looking at different mouth guards for snoring, and found several that looked like they may work.
A mouthguard for snoring device typically uses one of two solutions:
- a Mandibular Repositioning Device (MRD – also called MAD with the A meaning Advancement) where the mouthpiece moves the lower jaw forward to allow more air to enter the passageway
- a Tongue Stabilizing Device (TSD) where a part of the mouthpiece works to hold down the tongue so that more air can get through.
As I continued to research, I found several mouthguards that claimed to stop snoring using one solution or the other, and had decent numbers of good reviews. However, the product that really caught my eye incorporated BOTH types of mouthguard. This amazing find was both an MAD and a TSD! This had to be great! Zyppah Hybrid Oral Appliance to the rescue! Another thing that made it even more appealing was that when you order the pink one, the company donates a portion of the proceeds to the Susan G. Komen foundation! While Zyppah was going to help my family get better sleep, we we helping to raise money for a great cause, as well! This was a win – win! Plus, they have a 90-day return policy with an extra 90 days if you order the recommended SNAP cleanser, as well. I figured it was definitely worth a try!
There were several other reasons that Zyppah was the winner when compared to the other mouthguards for snoring. Read my full Zyppah Review to find out why I think Zyppah beats out the rest.
Zyppah spelled backward is “Happy Z”…..
Our Zyppah arrived within days after ordering, and the box was pretty fancy, as well! I must admit, I was a little concerned about how it would fit my husband’s mouth, but there were super clear instructions that made it easy to use. The Zyppah mouthguard is made of soft material that, when heated in hot water, will conform to your particular teeth pattern. Since having a mouth appliance during sleep was something my husband had never experienced, he followed the “1-minute plan” the company suggests. You start by wearing it for 1 minute, and increase by increments of 1 minute until you are ready to wear it all night.
Happy Z’s means happy sleep! And this is exactly what we got the first night he wore it to sleep. According to several of the reviews I read for Zyppah, during the period of the first few nights, some people experience soreness in the jaw. This happened to my husband, although the soreness was minimal probably because he used the “1-minute method” to get used to it. Now he wears it every night, and the snoring has literally stopped. We are all resting well!
There are quite a few tongue stabilizing anti snoring products that all worked by holding the tongue forward such as the Good Morning Snore Solution, that got good reviews. However, Zyppah takes a different approach by holding the tongue down and in place using a soft rubber-like strap. This sounded much more comfortable to me.
